French Military Cemetery
DETAILS
French military ceme... ... (Area)
This is a piece of land on the outskirts of the city of Korça, where 640 French soldiers who gave their lives for freedom during the First World War (1916-1918) rest. The historical documents of the time show that hundreds of soldiers of the French forces who defended and fought for the interests of their country were killed in the Balkan Peninsula, and that many of them were also killed in Korça. The French government, having a cooperative relationship with the Korça priory and the leaders of the patriotic movement of the time, decided to group its martyrs by building a military’s cemetery, but always with the belief that it would bring them back to their country as soon as the war was over. . But it didn’t happen. The land for this cemetery was provided by the Provincial Council, which administrated at that time the Autonomous Province of Korça. The French Military Cemetery was built in 1938. It is worth mentioning the fact that the soldiers who died for France and who rest in the outskirts of Korça, are not all of French nationality. This is because, during the war, France also mobilized soldiers from the country that were its settlers. Consequently, soldiers of Italian, Moroccan, Algerian and Korean nationalities are also buried in the French Military Cemetery.
