History (Alue)
The founding of the church of " Zojës Nunciatë " and the attached Franciscan Monastery is said to be related to the passage to these parts of St. Francis of Assisi during the return from the Holy Land in 1219-1220. Legend says that St. Francis took a pine branch where he had stopped to spend the night on the hill opposite the city of Lezha, and drew the foundations of a church. The construction of the church was completed by a priest from Lezha, named Dom Lleshi. At the end of World War I after using it as a health center, the retreating Austrian army burn the complex. The monastery would only be rebuilt in 1930. Nowadays the Monastery of St. Francis and the Church have been completely restored.
